The Davis McKinney Sensory Room was dedicated on February 20, 2008.  Members of the family and friends were on hand to celebrate the ribbon cutting.

What is a "sensory room"?  Sensory or "multi-sensory" rooms can be used for a variety of  reasons.  Depending on the needs of the user, the room can be very relaxing and calming or more stimulating.  Equipment in the room is designed to give the user control of their environment.  When everything else seems out of control, use of the sensory room can help the user regain control of emotions that allows them to control their behavior.

Our Sensory Room is equipped with a bubble column, light control panel, aroma-therapy diffuser, fiber-optic strands, CD player, wedge supports, fiber optic carpet and bean bag chairs.

At no time is the sensory room used as a "punishment" for inappropriate behavior.  The room is designed to be used as an intervention and positive reinforcement tool.

If you would like to visit our Sensory Room, please contact Creig Turner to arrange for a tour.  creig.turner@annandale.org

The beautiful "port hole" mural was painted by Annandale's Arts and Academics Instructor, Tammy Severino.

Staff members try out the fiber optics during the dedication reception.  Villagers will be able to schedule time to spend in the sensory room just to unwind and relax.
