ANNANDALE VILLAGE ATHLETES
EXCELL AT STATE SPECIAL OLYMPICS

The Georgia Special Olympics State Summer Games were held May 29-31, 2009 at the Woodruff P.E. Center and Candler Soccer Field at Emory University.  Athletes from all across the state gathered to kick off the competition on Friday evening with an opening ceremony and lighting of the Special Olympic torch at McDonough Field.  Governor Sonny Perdue helped to light the Flame of Hope on the front steps of the State Capitol earlier in the day after it had been carried across the state by law enforcement officers as a Special Olympics fund raiser.  The torch was carried to it’s final destination at Emory by members of the 2009 Law Enforcement Torch Run.  The Torch Run’s presenting sponsor is Publix Supermarkets.

Special Olympic athletes competed in gymnastics, aquatics, athletics/track and field, volleyball, soccer, and tennis during the two day event.  Fifteen Annandale Villagers participated; eight in aquatics, seven in athletics.  The Annandale teams won a total of seven gold medals; six in athletics and one in swimming, four silver medals; two in swimming and two in athletics, eleven bronze medals; seven swimming, four athletics, four fourth place ribbons; three swimming, one athletics, four fifth place ribbons; three swimming, one athletics, and one participation ribbon.

Events in the aquatics division included the 100 meter freestyle, 50 meter freestyle/breast stroke, 25 meter backstroke/freestyle, the individual IM, 15 meter walk and the 4-person relay.  Athletic events included the 50 meter dash, softball throw and standing long jump.  Annandale staff and families were on hand to cheer our competitors to victory!

The Annandale Village Special Olympics coaches are Bill Judd, April Griffith, and Sandy Weaver. Preparation for the games is part of the recreation program offered at Annandale Village through the Program Center curriculum.  All Villagers are encouraged to participate in the activities that are most interesting to them.  Annandale Village has fifty eight Special Olympic athletes that participate in year-round Special Olympic activities.

The Annandale Village Special Olympic teams also enjoyed the Olympic Town games, free dental/vision screenings, and a special night of celebration out on the town with the athletes and coaches of AADD/Dekalb County.
